Island hopping in Maputo, Mozambique
Vialula and I were lucky today to get on a third party
tour with some friends and make it a water and beach day. These are always fun and the folks we go with
are great. In fact, today we were happy
to have one of our guest presenters along with us. She is with us for about 18 presentations about
everything African. She knows her stuff. So all in all I had 6 mermaids to watch out
for today.
So, we get to go to three different islands today. Our first stop, after about an hour long boat ride, was Santa Maria to get a little snorkeling in. We find out that we are not on an island at all but just a beach attached to the mainland. Had we driven to this same place it would have taken 5 hours to get there.
We
landed ashore and after getting all our gear and towels out we headed for the
small lagoon. The current out beyond
the lagoon was fairly strong so we stayed inside. The water was cool and a little murky and
there wasn’t a ton of fish to see but it is still fun to get wet and have the
sun warm and dry you. Vialula drew a
birthday sign out in the smooth sand and after seeing her do that several
others copied her idea as they had people with birthdays coming too. It was nice to have an hour or two to just
relax and enjoy the sun.
We then made our way to Inhaca Island for lunch at Restaurante Lucas. The boat got us as close as they could and we walked up the beach during low tide. Inhaca village is a fascinating stroll. 6,000 people call it home and they are the nicest people. There are 3 restaurants and a hotel or two on the island. The grouper they served for lunch was excellent, like it just came out of the sea. Some good deals were made by my mermaids to purchase some of the local trinkets and clothes, and I think for the most part everyone was happy. Thanks to Kween K for the photo of the soccer team who were walking down the road ...
After strolling through the village and waving at the folks
we made our way back down to our boat. A
quick trip took us over to Portuguese island also known as elephant island. The
elephants in the area used to walk over to this island from the mainland when
the tide was low. This island is a favorite stopping point for some of the
small cruise ships. It is called Portuguese Island because it was where people used
to trade with the Portuguese. A quick
swim there to cool down again and soon we are back on the boat and heading back
to the city of Muputo. Kind of glad we
missed the big city as we were needing a water day again.
